School education:

Primary education lasts for four years. Secondary education lasts for eight years. It comprises general, vocational and specialized secondary education. Specialized secondary education leads to the Diploma of Completed Specialized Secondary Education.

Higher education:

Higher education is mainly provided by universities and institutes. They come under the responsibility of the Ministry of Education.

University level studies:

University level first stage: Junior Specialist, Bachelor (Bakalavr), Diploma of Specialist:

The degree of Junior Specialist is conferred after two years of study. The degree of Bachelor (Bakalavr) is awarded after four years of study. The Diploma of Specialist in a given field is conferred after four to five years' study.

University level second stage: Master (Magistre), Kandidat Nauk:

The Master's Degree (Magistre)  is awarded after two years' study beyond the Bachelor's Degree. The Kandidat Nauk degree is conferred after a further three years' study beyond the Specialist Degree and the defence of a thesis.

University level third stage: Doctorate:

A PhD (new system) is conferred after a further three years' study beyond the Master's Degree and presentation of a thesis.
